Quick answer

Since patch 1.0.4, Moon Sweepers keeps up to five full world backups per save slot. The developer describes a backup one minute into each session, then every 30 minutes. These copies are local and stored outside Steam Cloud in the official Windows Backups folder. S03S17

Where to find automatic backups

Paste this path into File Explorer's address bar:

%USERPROFILE%\AppData\LocalLow\DragDropGames\MoonSweepers\Backups

Windows expands %USERPROFILE% to the current user directory. Use the Windows profile that ran the game. The save game location guide includes the literal developer path and step-by-step Explorer controls.

How often should a backup appear?

Point in a session What the developer schedule describes
Before the first minute First scheduled backup has not yet been reached
Around minute 1 First backup opportunity
Around minute 31 First 30-minute interval afterward
Around minute 61 Next 30-minute interval
Later sessions The one-minute start rule applies again, with the per-slot limit

The times are a reading of the published schedule, not observed write timestamps. A crash, missing files or an unsuccessful write cannot be ruled out just by calculating elapsed time. “Up to five” is a maximum, not a promise that every slot always has five usable copies.

Preserve the copies that exist

  1. Close the game before copying.
  2. Open the containing MoonSweepers folder.
  3. Copy it to a dated folder outside the game's directory.
  4. Compare relative file names, counts and sizes while the game remains closed.
  5. Note the affected slot, last working session, first error and installed build.

Preserving all available files avoids choosing a slot or a “good” backup from a guessed filename. File dates can help compare events, but do not validate the world or its slot mapping.

Does the game restore a backup automatically?

The developer describes repair from available backups during loading, with a notification, and save checks on the next start after a crash. This does not guarantee recovery from every failure. It also does not provide a manual rename-and-overwrite recipe. S03

If a save fails, use save will not load to separate damaged data from documented loading bugs. If you are relying on another computer or synchronization, read Steam Cloud and local backups. Automatic local copies do not replace a separately preserved copy.
